Black Sabbath is a great band with a tremendous history, but that history is fragmented into several different eras. That's part of what makes the band so damned interesting.
You've got the Ozzy Osbourne era...
The Dio era...
The Ian Gillan experiment...
Glenn Hughes lasted for a few months...
Then you had Tony Martin for several years (and albums)...
Of course, Dio came back in '91, only to leave at the end of '92 and be replaced by Tony Martin, who would be bumped for Ozzy's return, who in turn would see the band walk away from him a decade later in favor of Ronnie James Dio and the Heaven and Hell name.
My personal preference is for the DIO material, but I'm a fan of all of those eras, especially the underrated Tony Martin era, but none of it would have happened without the original line-up and their groundbreaking albums loaded with classics.
So what are your favorite Sabbath eras/singers? Favorite Sabbath albums?
My favorite Sabbath albums (in chronological order)
Paranoid Master of Reality Sabotage Heaven and Hell Mob Rules The Eternal Idol Dehumanizer Cross Purposes
But I like almost all of their albums a hell of a lot. Tony Iommi sure accomplished a lot for a guy who had parts of two fingers cut off on his fretting hand!

My fav' Sabbath album is Born Again, with Ian Gillan on lead vocals. But Master Of Reality is a pretty close second. I'm not too keen on the Dio and Martin albums, but I have bootlegs with Dio and Martin and they're damn good. :-)

Seems to me like quite a few of their records were really Iommi solo things just called Black Sabbath. My favorite era is the Ozzy stuff. Though I do like Heaven and Hell, it sounds as much like Rainbow as it does the original Sabbath.

I really don't like Dio, plus I grew up with the Ozzy Sabbath....
