As we have just passed the 30 year anniversary of Bon Scott's untimely death it brings to mind both how much and how little AC/DC changed with the change in lead vocalists.
Bon and Brian Johnson are very differnt from each other, and yet both are workmanlike performers. Both are working class, blue collar kind of guys who bring that approach to the stage.
But while the band didn't really change their approach or their basic style, there was a noticeable shift in their songwriting once Bon was gone. While the earlier material had more of a boogie influence and was often rowdy, their Brian Johnson era material was a little more controlled, just a tad more polished, and not quite as dangerous.
Having said that, Back in Black is easily my favorite AC/DC album. It was the bridge between the two eras of the band's history, and is a flawless album.
I tend to prefer the Brian Johnson era material, but it was a little more inconsistent than the Bon Scott era albums.
